Sickle Cell Disease of Illinois
Community Education
Through SCDAI’s educational activities public awareness about
sickle cell disease is being heightened. A major part of SCDAI’s mission is
explaining to the community the signs and symptoms of sickle cell disease.
However, it is important to note that sickle cell disease cannot be determined
by symptoms alone because its symptoms can mimic those of many diseases or
conditions. |

Reporting on the current status of the search for a cure or better treatment
methods for sickle cell disease is another facet of SCDAI’s community education
mandate as is letting the public know how we're doing in our efforts to break
the sickle cycle.
SCDAI also makes available a varied selection of literature, games, films, tapes
and other audio-visual aids to hospitals, schools, social service agencies,
community organizations as well as to patients and other interested persons.
SCDAI’s educative outreach is broadened further by means of regular contact with
print and broadcast media and through participation in community-sponsored
expositions, health fairs and numerous health-related seminars and symposiums.
